Chapter 25

Meissner had been up in his office since dawn. His obedient Cane Corso, Mauser, was sitting rigidly beside him like a statue while the merc commander mentally reviewed the events of last night’s assault upon Hendrix’s place and the loss of his three-man team.

Certano was his best sniper and his demise was going to be a costly setback for future operations, not to mention creating a void for training new fighters.

Ten men dead in the past week! I’m going to fucking incinerate Matina and everyone in it to get to Hendrix.

The number of his fully trained cadre were now cut in half, with only around a dozen men on site. He knew after the election he was going to have to focus on recruitment efforts again to replenish his ranks.

He recalled the radio-chatter from the assault team, focusing upon the reports from his two men inside the house. That woman must have had some advanced combative skills to take them down. Who the hell is this guy Hendrix...and his woman!

A call came in on the walkie-talkie mounted on its charging rack on the wall. His computer hacker, Reina Shaw, grabbed the device and walked it over to him.

“Sir, you should probably come down to the front entrance,” said his second-in-command, Claus Henson, in an unusually pensive tone.

“I’m busy. What the hell do you need?”

“There’s a visitor, demanding to see you. Says she’s your sister, Victoria.”

Meissner felt his ribs tighten. Shit! She’s not supposed to be here. I’m supposed to fly Aiden back to Buenos Aires for the funeral.

He scanned the computer monitor on his right, searching the live camera feed from around his compound until he located the front gate where a black Range Rover was waiting. He could see Victoria’s lean face beyond the lowered rear window.

“Escort them to the garage. I’ll be there in a minute.”

He tossed the walkie-talkie down then stood up, tucking in his shirt and glancing at his reflection in the laptop’s screen while slicking back his hair.

He noticed Shaw staring at him from her workstation across the room.

“Stop looking at me with those bug eyes and get back to work. I’m not paying you to gawk. Keep searching for anything further on that son of a bitch Hendrix and the redhead.” He paused by the door, turning towards her. “And feed my fucking dog. I don’t need him drooling all over my eight-thousand dollar rug.”

“Yes, sir.” She replied in a near monotone voice, but he could detect the faint defiance in her tone as she spun around, returning to her computer.

Hackers...they’re all cut from the same threadbare cloth of humanity. Bunch of self-important shits.

Meissner flung open the office door then trotted down the stairs, walking through the massive warehouse which stored his vehicles, armory, and the sleeping quarters and chow hall for his recruits.

Exiting the air-conditioned facility, the sticky air smacked him in the face like a wet pillow. There was an inordinate amount of birdsong emanating from the old-growth cypress trees casting shade over the grounds.
